My name is Dean Jones and I am the Regional Recovery Officer for Western Victoria.
I was born and raised in Hamilton in South West Victoria and now live in Ballarat.
I have worked in agriculture and environmental programs for more than 20 years and hold a degree in Applied Science, a masters in Sustainable Agriculture and post-graduate qualifications in Teaching and Irrigation and River Management.
My previous work includes fire fighter in the small Victorian town of Natimuk, a hydrographer measuring groundwater, stream and channel flow in northern Victoria, and researcher and educator in irrigation management.
I have also had stints in the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific working on agricultural development programs. For nine years I was the Australian Government’s Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator for Victoria and Tasmania delivering the ‘Caring for our Country’ and National Landcare Program. During this period I worked with an exceptional community of land carers, farmers and agencies all focused on improving farming practices and soil health.
I am excited to be taking up the position of Regional Recovery Officer, supporting regional communities as they deal with the impacts of drought. I am also looking forward to re-engaging with old colleagues, building new networks and helping to deliver programs for the betterment of regional Western Victoria.
