My name is Kalen Sowter and I am the Regional Recovery Officer for the NSW Hunter, MidCoast, Port Stephens, Liverpool Plains and Mid-Western regions.
I live in the beautiful area of Scone, the horse capital of Australia, having previously farmed in the Lower Hunter.
I hold a Bachelor of Management in Rural Business and previously worked as a Rural Support Worker in the Department of Primary Industries Rural Resilience Team, looking after the Hunter regions.
In this role I developed workshops and events for primary producers and rural communities to build their skills and increase personal and business resilience. My role was also to support farming families while they were recovering from adverse events, helping them to build preparedness skills to better anticipate and manage future difficult or extreme events.
As a Rural Support Worker I also worked with primary producers across regional and remote NSW, listening to and learning about the challenges they faced, and feeding that information back to policy makers and researchers. One of my goals is to keep linking people with social and emotional wellbeing tools and resources to ensure that when the tough times arrive we are all prepared as possible.
As a Regional Recovery Officer I am part of a team that is committed to seeing rural and regional businesses, communities and farming families succeed. I will be travelling widely across the region, and I look forward to catching up with you in your town or on your property soon.
