Gary's story from the canefields


When the Haughton River burst its banks during the floods, it dumped silt onto Gary Stockham’s sugarcane. It also ripped out his main irrigation pipe and destroyed his roads.

Gary is a third generation canegrower in Giru, and his son is out on the farm too. They’ve been through some tough times, but it was a great relief when they found out about the Special Disaster Assistance Recovery Grants.

“We thought it would be hard to get the grant, but it was simple. We had a quick response, it took a lot of pressure off us.”
