Genie Cluff has been running a sheep and cattle property south of Winton on her own for 14 years.
With occasional help from friends and family, she struggled through years of drought, only to be hit badly by February’s flood event.
During the flood, Genie’s farm roads and fencing all but washed away. She was stranded in vehicles bogged in mud and had to hand feed her orphaned calves and lambs.
Since then, with the support of the Rural Financial Counselling Service North Queensland and hardworking volunteers from BlazeAid, Genie’s been able to access the jointly funded $75,000 Special Disaster Assistance Recovery Grant to begin restocking and rebuilding her farm.
“It’s just unbelievable – I don’t know how I would have coped without it.”
